RE-ISSUES: FANIA & OTHERS
Fania Codigo are re-issuing a flood of classic salsa from the 60's and 70's. Also, a number of other labels are doing likewise. Far too much to list here, but check the Descarga website below for thousands of great albums (but set a bit of time aside for this!).

FRANKIE VAZQUEZ: Several albums
Frankie is probably my favourite sonero amongst many; I love the texture of his voice and his phrasing. He has been with many of the very best bands over the past 30 years, including Libre, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Jimmy Bosch and a host of others, too numerous to mention. I found a selection of his music on the Prodland (www.prodland.de ) site. I imagine they are on Frankie's own album as there is little cover information, but the tracks, many live, cry out to be danced to.
WILLY TORRES: Hardcore
Another great album by top sonero Willy Torres, which is both highly danceable and has the highest quality of musicians and arrangement.
LOUIE COLON: Best of
Relatively little known artist, but this album has some superb tracks, one of which (Oyarde) is one of my all time favourites. Sound quality not perfect, but very acceptable.
LEYO PENA: Best of...
Super album of 70's salsa, mostly guaguancos, and very danceable. Not highest quality sound, but well worth the money.
WILLIAMSBURG SALSA ORCHESTRA
An unusual album, & one I did not expect to like, as I have a distaste for English language salsa; but this works! funky and fun.
FRANKIE MORALES: No Te Equivoques...es
Latest offering by Top Sonero Frankie, (and in my opinion his best yet), who used to be Tito Puente's vocalist. First class album.
MAMBO LEGENDS ORCHESTRA: Watch Out [Ten Cuidao] 2 CD's.
Excellent mambo album by top-notch musicians who played the the Legendary Tito Puente. For dancing or listening.
JOSE RAUL "LIPS" MORALES: Tumbaito y Trompeta
Excellent album, with some outstanding dance tracks. Top class musicians.
LUIS GONZALEZ (El Tsunami de la Salsa) - Tributo a un Gigante
Fabulous album by Senor Gonzalez. Great dance tracks. This one has been playing constantly in my house the past few days, and will be on the decks next week!
SABROSO GUAGUANCO VOLS 1,2 & 3 ; Various artists
3 albums of what seem to be mostly 60's and 70's Guaguanco. Delightful to listen to, if you can stop dancing, that is!
SOL : La Que Manda Soy Yo
Modern New York salsa, with a couple of English language tracks (which I do not usually like) which are not at all bad. Worth having.
ARTURO SANDOVAL & UWDR BIG BAND: Mambo Nights
Truly superb album, of Mambo/Latin Jazz, performed by one of the Giants of the scene. The album starts with a gorgeous version of Mongo Santamaria's Sofrito, and doesn't let up. Outstanding.
La SONORA PONCENA: Trayectoria y Consistencia
Another fine album by this great Puerto Rican orchestra. One of my all time favourite bands, for dancing or listening.
MONGORAMA: Mongorama
Outstanding album, in honour of the legendary Mongo Santamaria. Absolutely top-notch musicians, with an album for everyone. Latin Jazz, Chachacha; Guajiras; and straight up dance tracks. Superb.
SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA: Viva La Tradicion
Superb new album of pure salsa dance music by the New York Maestros.
